Top 5 new Metaplane features
Our product team moved quickly this year, shipping 31 new features to make data observability in Metaplane more comprehensive, more intuitive, and more impactful. Here’s a roundup of our five favorite features we shipped in 2024.
Data Insights
Launched our Data Insights feature, enabling teams to explore and automatically identify performance, usage, and cost issues within their data warehouses, promoting efficient resource utilization.
End-to-end dbt observability
2024 was a big year for our integration with dbt as we rolled out end-to-end dbt observability.
Before this year, observability in dbt looked like jumping between tools, laboriously building custom workflows, and wasting time diagnosing where a job is failing. Now, Metaplane operates as a central hub where you can see everything related to your dbt pipelines and trust that everyone on your team is looking at the same information.
Before deployment, Metaplane's GitHub integration proactively looks at your dbt code changes to run regression tests and identify potential impacts on your data warehouse tables and BI dashboards.
During deployment, Metaplane’s job-duration monitoring tracks the runtime of your dbt jobs and alerts you when they take longer than usual. Plus, with model-level visibility you can dive deep into individual models within your dbt jobs to pinpoint exactly where delays or failures are occurring.
Then, after deployment, notifications help you catch issues before impact spreads, and you can quickly trace issues back to their source, whether it's a recent pull request, an upstream data change, or an unexpected anomaly in your data models.
Intelligent incident management and better signal-to-noise
Every data professional knows the pain of getting too many alerts—especially for things that aren’t actually significant issues. So this year, we set out to solve the signal-to-noise problem in a couple of different ways.
First, we made some serious advancements to our anomaly detection algorithm to make sure that, if we’re alerting you for an anomaly, it really is an anomaly.
Second, we rolled out intelligent incident management. Now, when a table does something like spike in row count, you won’t get notifications for every downstream table along with it. Intelligent incident management groups them all into one tidy incident so that you’re not inundated by notifications.
Plus, you can assign:
- Incident owners and custom labels so everyone knows who’s on call for each incident
- Auto-resolve rules and failure thresholds to keep your incident list clean and actionable
Source-to-target monitoring
Fresh out of the oven is a new monitoring feature in Metaplane called source-to-target monitoring. This feature lets you compare data from multiple data sources in one monitor, so you can be confident that your data stays consistent throughout your pipeline.
Snowflake native app
In November we were excited to launch our native Snowflake app in the Snowflake marketplace—bringing Metaplane's comprehensive data observability capabilities directly into your Snowflake environment.
Now, Metaplane users can take advantage of Snowflake's robust security and governance features while providing the monitoring and alerting capabilities that data teams need. Plus, you can use your existing Snowflake credits——no additional procurement needed.
Integration highlights
While we were incredibly busy inside the Metaplane platform, we also enhanced how we work with all your favorite data tools—launching 12 new integrations so that we could work with even more of your data pipeline.
And, just before the buzzer, we expanded on our existing GitHub integration by supporting data CI/CD for GitLab repositories! Now, teams using GitLab can preview the downstream impact of changes, test changes before merging, and be far more proactive about data quality.
Metaplane on the road ✈️
It wasn’t all heads down making product improvements this year, though. Some of our favorite moments of 2024 came while we were out talking with you, our customers and our community.
Whether it was attending Snowflake Summit and Coalesce, or hosting dinners for local data pros, we loved getting to talk, learning what you’re working on, and how we can be a better observability tool.
We also learned that data people like running—even if it means getting up at 6:30am the morning after an open bar.
Customer love
We were honored to hear tons of kind words and support for Metaplane from our customers. That showed itself this Winter when Metaplane was again named a G2 leader in data observability, maintaining our position as #1 across every major index with the highest overall rating of 4.8/5.
Our platform is nothing if it doesn’t work for our customers, and we’re incredibly grateful for signals like these that tell us it does.
We also got to talk to friends from Bluecore, Census, and Rinsed to learn how they’re using Metaplane to boost their data quality.
Fundraising and partnerships
In March, we were thrilled to announce our $13.8M Series A led by Felicis Ventures. Then, in May, we announced an investment from Snowflake, strengthening our already tight partnership with the Snowflake team.
These investments, along with alignment between Metaplane and those who’ve invested, are what’s enabling us to continue building our best-in-class data observability tool, and are real milestones in bringing our vision of data observability to life.
What’s coming in 2025?
We don’t want to give away too much about it yet, but trust us, there’s a lot to get excited about.
Things that are top of mind for us are:
- Giving data teams a true mission control for their metadata.
- Bringing data quality to the business, beyond the warehouse and to where data is being consumed.
- Helping data teams fix issues—not just find out about them.
What will that look like, exactly? You’ll find out soon 😉
That’s a wrap for our 2024 feature highlights. Go try out anything exciting you might have missed. And if you don't have a Metaplane account yet, sign up for free today.
2025 is already shaping up to be even better, and we can’t wait to share what’s coming next.
To our customers, thank you for being part of the ride with Metaplane. Here’s to even more exciting things ahead.
